PROJECT
Bracebridge Heritage Walking Trail Sign Design
DESIGN SOLUTION
As part of the Town of Bracebridge's 150th anniversary celebrations, the Heritage Walking Trail information signs were revitalized and reimagined as a lasting legacy project that honours the community's rich history while creating an engaging visitor experience for years to come.
Originally conceptualized during Bracebridge's 100th anniversary celebrations in 1975 and first installed in 1981, the Heritage Walking Trail guides residents and visitors through significant locations that have helped shape the town's identity. The trail features 12 interpretive signs located throughout the downtown core, waterfront areas along the Muskoka River, and at the historic Woodchester property. Each sign highlights important stories, people, industries, landmarks, and events that have contributed to the growth and character of Bracebridge.
The goal of this project was to modernize and refresh the graphics for the Heritage Walking Trail signage while maintaining the historical significance and educational value of the content. The Town wanted a cohesive visual experience that would celebrate the community's 150th anniversary, ensuring that this milestone event became an enduring part of the town's story. The new look for the sign designs needed to be accessible, visually appealing, and engaging for a wide audience — residents, tourists, families, and history enthusiasts.
Our design approach drew inspiration directly from the Bracebridge 150-year visual identity — bright colours, typography, and graphic elements — to create a strong connection between the Heritage Walking Trail and this important anniversary year.
With “Walking Trail” at the heart of the project, a dotted line graphic was introduced as a recurring visual element throughout the signs, weaving through photographs and content while visually connecting key points of interest. This graphic device guides visitors and creates a sense of movement and continuity from sign to sign, reinforcing discovery and exploration throughout the experience.
Historic photographs were paired with carefully organized content to make information easy to navigate and enjoyable to read. Supporting illustrated graphics, inspired from the Bracebridge 150-year logo, were strategically integrated throughout the signage to add visual interest, reinforce key themes, and create a more engaging storytelling experience.
The result is a vibrant and cohesive interpretive signage program that celebrates Bracebridge's past while embracing its future. By combining historical content with contemporary design, the revitalized Heritage Walking Trail encourages visitors to explore, learn, and connect with the stories that have shaped the community over the past 150 years
